My musical view pt.1: Drums

The key to everything with music is practice, patience and understanding that it takes time time time to get where you want to be. to me, that is the best part about music, you literally get to watch yourself grow. My suggestion to you wanting to be in a band is this. Work to make yourself grow as a musician first. Music is honestly like a relationship, not necessarily like any certain 1 type of relationship. Just think of music as a relationship you understand. It takes time, trust and compromise to keep it strong. Drums are all about muscle memory, practice slow! Start with just a practice pad and playing different “rudiments” and rhythms. When I started drumming I did stick work for a year and a half before I jumped to a drum set. PLUS a Roland practice pad and a pair of drums sticks are far cheaper than a drum-set. You don’t need a drum set to start learning drums. If you have a drum-set I suggest you start to practice playing and preforming to a click track (metronome) and play slow, slow slow. Playing slow makes your muscles grow with the music. Once you grow with the music on your own, you can then be musically self sufficient enough to find other people to jam with. Always look at the next situation as if you are a leader. You want to be the one who can jam not the one whose jamming to someone else. Jamming is a huge part of growing as a band and if you can’t jam on your own, its going to be hard to jive with someone else. Hope this helps
